And then suddenly, I’m often the oldest one in the room

Writer: Van Eijndhoven & GOVan Eijndhoven & GO

I recently wrote this on LinkedIn:

“And then suddenly, I’m often the oldest one in the room’ I look around and estimate the ages. What it matters? Nothing at all, but suddenly I realise that becoming 58 and older is really different. For me it means knowledge, expertise, and insight. And knowing very well what I can and cannot do or want to do.

Plus: wrinkles and flat shoes. Polite adolescents getting up for me and being called Madam. It takes some time to get used to and I allow myself that time.

By now, I know what truly matters. And so I choose to live a life with a vibrant mind. I stand up against the cultural myths and stereotypes that creep up on me. I value my wisdom and expertise, they’re pure gold. I take the time to recognise and cherish them.

And when I meet you in ‘my’ room, whether you’re 20, 32, 45, or 67, I’ll challenge you to gather your courage, nurture your curiosity, harness your determination, and practise the patience you’ll need in order to find and hold onto the course that’s right for you. I invite you to embrace the power of pausing. To reflect on where you are, on what truly matters to you, and the principles you want to live by. And above all, I’ll challenge you to have a good laugh, because learning and having fun together are such a great combination.

And if you feel the need to remind me that I’m 58, my Rotterdam roots will kick in, and I’ll say, ‘Why don’t you just sod off, eh?’ And let me tell you, that feels absolutely brilliant.
